Mass Removal

A mass removal is a generic term that refers to any kind of tumor that is surgically excised. Masses can grow anywhere on the body.  The types of tumors are numerous. Common varieties include:  Lipomas (fatty tumor), cysts and skin tags. These are benign or non-cancerous growths. However there are also malignant neoplasias that are cause for concern.  When the doctor first examines the mass, a fine needle aspirate is performed to determine the nature of the growth.  A needle is inserted into the tumor to remove some of its cells. The cells then are fixed on to a slide and stained to be examined under a microscope.  Occasionally, the slide can not be identified in house and then it is sent to a reference laboratory to be examined. Depending on the type of malignant growth found, radiographs of the chest may be necessary to determine whether or not the cancer has spread to the lungs.  After the mass is removed, it may be recommended by the doctor to send the sample to the reference laboratory to ensure that all of the cancerous cells were removed and to determine what kind of tumor it is.
