Entropion

Entropion is the term used to describe an inward rolling of the eyelid(s). It may cause the eyelashes to rub against the sensitive clear covering of the eyeball (cornea) and often causes discomfort or pain. It can also cause serious eye damage. Entropion can be temporary or permanent and can occur at any age after the eyes open (~ 2 weeks of age or older). Causes include birth defects, injuries and other eye disorders. This condition is commonly seen in dog breeds which have excessive wrinkles or excessive skin around the face and eyes (Shar Pei, Bulldog). The most common surgical procedure used to correct entropion involves removing a small amount of the eyelid and then suturing the skin and underlying subcutaneous tissues together. This essentially shortens the eyelid to prevent its ability to roll inward and affect the cornea.
