Castration
Castration is the removal of the testicles, it results in permanent sterility. We usually recommend castration or neutering by 4 to 6 months of age. This will prevent prostate problems, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and some forms of rectal cancer. It will also decrease interanimal aggression, roaming and it seems to improve hearing and pet obedience when the neighbor's dog is in heat. Most animals that are presented in an emergency situation after being hit by a car are intact males. Let's not forget the animal over population problem. If you need a reminder, visit your local animal shelter. Most shelters are performing early castration to make sure the pet is neutered before going to its new home. There are no long term adverse effects to this procedure. Your pet will not grow up small or stunted, research actually shows that they will grow taller with early neutering rather than if they are left intact. |
