Spay

A spay is an ovariohysterectomy. It is the removal of the ovaries and the uterus. Spaying is typically done at 4 to 6 months of age, before your pet comes into heat. Most Humane Societies are spaying as early as 8 weeks of age to ensure that it is done before the pet leaves the shelter. Research shows that there are no adverse long term effects from early spaying or neutering. If your pet is spayed before its first heat, it will decrease the risk of mammary cancer by 100%. It also prevents a deadly infection in the uterus called a pyometra as well as ovarian cancer. Intact pets are 30% more likely to bite than neutered pets are. Besides the individual health benefits for your pet, spaying also helps to reduce the unwanted pet population and neglected animals. Some parents would like their children to experience a pet going through gestation and the birth of puppies or kittens. We suggest you tune into the Discovery channel instead, or perhaps a tour of the local animal shelter to meet all of the unwanted, abused, and neglected pets that need a good home. Spay your pet.
